Brightest and best of the sons

of the morning,

Dawn on our darkness, and lend [ing,

Star of our East, the horizon adorn

Guide where our infant Re-

deemer is laid.


Verse 2

Cold on His cradle the dew-drops [of the stall;

Low lies His head with beasts 

Angels adore Him in slumber re- [of all.

Maker, and Monarch, and Saviour


Verse 3

Say, shall we yield Him, in costly [divine,

Odours of Edom, and offerings 

Gems of the mountain and pearls

of the ocean,

Myrrh from the forest or gold 

from the mine?


Verse 4

Vainly we offer each ample obla- [favour secure;

tion;

Vainly with gifts would His 

Richer by far is the heart’s adora- 

tion;

Dearer to God are the prayers of[the poor
