Hymn 241: O Men of God, Arise! The

Verse 1

O Men of God, Arise! the

Lord

Has given thee in His wondrous [Word

Great promises of mighty signs

To ratify the sacred lines

Of His Salvation’s perfect plan

As thou dost preach to fallen man.

Verse 2

If He, the Lord of Glory, need

Arresting sign and glowing deed

Credentials of Messiahship

Thy helpless hand and faltering lip

Must surely share an equal flame

To blazon forth Messiah’s Name!

Verse 3

These signs shall follow them, He

 saith,

Who speak His word in simple (faith

They shall with heaven’s authority

Bid foul tormenting spirits flee;

They shall in other tongues speak things

Beyond the range of finite wings

Verse 4

(So spake they after Pentecost

High mysteries of the Holy Ghost):

They shall the fearsome serpent tame,

And bind its venom in His Name:

If any deadly thing they take

It shall not hurt them, for His sake;

Verse 5

Upon the sick they shall lay hands.

Who shall arise from satan’s bands,

Leaving their fer’rous beds of pain

To leap like youngling hearts again.

O men of God! These signs must [be

As Christ’s authority to thee!

Verse 6

There is no other way! The word

Not heav’n confirmed must fall un-

heard,

For wondrous act and mighty sign

Are still the Saviour’s own design

To wing His message to each heart,

And bid the pow’rs of hell depart.
